Knowledge translation: A concept analysis

Abstract: Aim: The aim of this article is to clarify the concept of knowledge translation (KT) to close the gap that exists between research knowledge and actionable nursing practice. Background: KT addresses the research to practice gap that exists in healthcare. KT is often confused with other terms and needs to be defined further as a concept for clarification and application in nursing practice.Design: Concept analysis using the Walker and Avant method.Abstracts were reviewed for relevance, and 27 articles available … Show more

“…More rapid knowledge translation is an increasing necessity as a gap continues between scientific knowledge and evidence-based clinical practice (Morris et al, 2011; Olson & Oudshoorn, 2019). Using a case study approach with two exemplars, we suggest that PRECIS-2 and RE-AIM can be used to assess the likelihood that an intervention will influence health care delivery and improve health outcomes.…”

“…Knowledge translation is a dynamic process that includes synthesizing and applying the results of scientific research in a more timely and useful manner. On average, 17 years pass before effective research-based findings are implemented into practice, and even then only an estimated 14% of those findings result in health care delivery changes (Morris et al, 2011; Olson & Oudshoorn, 2019). One factor contributing to slow knowledge translation is a reliance on randomized controlled trials (RCTs), traditionally considered the gold standard of research design (Cartwight, 2007).…”

“…In addition to its FSS, the symphonic research product is presented in a dynamic and continuous manner to create, share, and apply evidence‐based knowledge 14 for those who are interested or in need of it in an effective fashion. The symphonic research product should show how symphonic research helps in the communication, feasibility, and predicted application of research findings for improving policies, decision‐making, nursing practice, and health results related to the research topic similar to planned activities of Knowledge Transfer Exchange (KTE) 31,33 …”
