Knowledge translation of the Canadian 24-Hour Movement Guidelines for Adults aged 18–64 years and Adults aged 65 years or older: a collaborative movement guideline knowledge translation process

Abstract: Establishing a step-by-step process that provides practitioners with a blueprint for translating movement guidelines into action stands to optimize the investment in guideline development, improve guideline promotion and uptake, and ultimately enhance population health. The purpose of this paper is to describe how the Knowledge-to-Action framework and integrated knowledge translation were operationalized to systematically inform our knowledge translation (KT) efforts for the Canadian 24-Hour Movement Guideline… Show more

“…The data also provide a benchmark for monitoring movement behaviours over time. As implementation of the guidelines is being considered in this population, 14 the results suggest that sedentary behaviour, and screen time in particular, would be a target if the goal was to increase adherence to the overall guidelines. Whether such a target makes sense from a health perspective is less clear given compositional analyses demonstrating that reallocating time into MVPA from other movement behaviours was associated with favourable changes to most health outcomes.…”

“…The CCWS will serve as a platform for future deployment and for tracking the health and well-being of post-secondary students over time. Given that the postsecondary population is a target of planned guideline implementation efforts, 14 the CCWS will be a mechanism for monitoring the dissemination and implementation of the new Canadian 24-hour movement guidelines for adults. Future research will examine how the CCWS data are used by institutions and how they inform policy, programming and practice initiatives to do with movement behaviours.…”

“…Before the new Canadian guidelines were finalized, a draft version was distributed through a stakeholder survey to gather input, feedback, and assessments from stakeholders, including SBRN members. 4 , 14 The survey was designed to explore SBRN members’ perceptions and levels of agreement with the new sedentary-behavior recommendations outlined in the Canadian 24-Hour Movement Guidelines for Adults aged 18 to 64 years and Adults aged 65 years and older. The survey was live for 2 and a half weeks, and 877 stakeholders landed on the front page of the survey.…”

“…The new Canadian 24-Hour Movement Guidelines for Adults aged 18 to 64 years and Adults aged 65 years and older are grounded in evidence from a variety of research sources, unanimously endorsed by the Guideline Development Panel 4 and strongly supported by stakeholders, including many SBRN members. 14 It is anticipated that these guideline recommendations will stimulate further investigation and research on the health impact of sedentary behavior across the adult lifespan and will serve to accelerate research efforts to challenge and fine-tune these guidelines. More research is encouraged, especially research employing strong experimental designs, research on large population samples with a range of physical and mental health outcomes, and research from a variety of geographic areas and cultures.…”

“…Future research should continually investigate their effectiveness, to support refinement and positive evaluations of these strategies among the general population [ 23 ], and should begin to evaluate other types of strategies (e.g., “mass media/communications campaigns”, “implementation toolkits”) to determine which contribute to positive outcomes. In all populations, future studies should incorporate more formative research on strategy development and improvement and continue using integrated knowledge translation approaches that engage relevant stakeholder groups from project outset [ 142 ], which may improve the potency of future guideline D&I efforts [ 143 ]. Overall, there is a need for further use and investigation of the effectiveness of a wider range of D&I strategies for both the general population and specific populations.…”
