Kodamaea hongheensis f.a., sp. nov., Kodamaea ovata f.a., sp. nov. and Kodamaea yamadae f.a., sp. nov., three new yeast species of Kodamaea (Saccharomycetales, Debaryomycetacae) from China

Abstract: Kodamaea includes a growing number of interesting yeasts of the family Debaryomycetacae that are widely distributed in temperate, subtropical and tropical regions of different continents. During recent yeast collections in Henan and Yunnan Province in China, several isolates of Kodamaea were obtained from rotting wood, all of which represent undescribed taxa. Based on morphological and phylogenetic analyses (ITS and LSU rDNA), three new species are proposed: K. hongheensis f.a., sp. nov., K. ovata f.a., sp. no… Show more

“…In this study, we obtained 286 yeast species, including 140 ascomycetous and 146 basidiomycetous species associated with intertidal zones of China (Table S2). Boekhout et al (2022) summarized that at least 782 yeast species have been recorded from China recorded until 2020 and 49 additional yeast species were reported from China in the past three years (Gao et al, 2021;Shi et al, 2021;Chai et al, 2022a;Chai et al, 2022b;Chai et al, 2022c;Chu et al, 2022;Li et al, 2022;Wei et al, 2022;Chai et al, 2023;Liu et al, 2023;Qiao et al, 2023;Yu et al, 2023;Zhu et al, 2023a;Zhu et al, 2023b). The number of yeast species discovered in this study accounts for 34.7% in the total yeast species that have been found from China, indicating that there are abundant resources of culturable yeasts in the intertidal zones of China.…”

“…ovata , and Ko. yamadae were proposed based on strains from the Xishuangbanna Primeval Forest Park, Yunnan province, and the Baotianman Nature Reserve, Henan province (Chai, Gao, Li, et al, 2022). Naumovozyma baii was proposed from two strains obtained from the Bawangling National Park, Hainan province (Liu et al, 2012), and T. jiuxiensis found from the Jiuxi Mountain Forest Park, Yunnan province (Chu et al, 2022).…”

“…Members of the Kodamaea species have been isolated from various habitats, including: beetle ( K. arcana , K. derodontid , K. plutei and K. laetipori ); beer ( K. mesenterica ); cucumber brines ( K. ohmeri ); decaying fruit ( K. leandrae ); flowers ( K. restingae , K. anthophila , K. transpacifica , K. nitidulidarum and K. kakaduensis ); insect frass ( K. loeiensis ); mushroom ( K. fukazawae , K. fungicola , K. kaohsiungensis , K. lidongshanica , K. sagamina , K. smagusa ); seawater ( K. suecica ) and soil ( K. alishanica , K. hsintzibuensis and K. meredithiae ); rotting wood ( K. ovata , K. jinghongensis , K. hongheensis , K. neixiangensis and K. yamadae ) [14]. Significantly, some species, K. mesenterica and K. ohmeri , are not only obtained from plant-related substrates and manmade products, but also found in clinical specimens.…”
