This article aims to discover the construction of Shia thought and geopolitics in Indonesia. Today, it is undeniable that Shia is a sect that is considered heretical and rejected by Indonesian society. This is not necessarily substantive, considering that the contradiction between Sunni and Shia has occurred since long ago. The rejection of Shia in Indonesia could be due to the truth claim over Sunni, which is the sect embraced by Indonesian society. This work applied a qualitative methodology with a social approach. This approach aims to construct research results using social phenomena in the field. The primary data in this research comprised of books and scientific articles that were accessed for analysis in the literature review method. The raw data was analyzed using content analysis techniques. The results showed that Shia thought in Indonesia became contradictory due to different interpretations. Generally, most Indonesian people who follow the Sunni sect reject Shia as a legitimate sect. On the other hand, the geopolitics of Shia in Indonesia still needs to run because its existence has not been recognized. Public rejection of Shia makes the position of Shia in Indonesia relatively stagnant and makes it challenging to experience growth.

This study explains how the existence of Tabut is interpreted so that it becomes a tradition in the Sunni’s community. It is important to understand how this ritual is maintained in the midst of the Sunni-Shia’s conflicts which continue to occur. The present study was qualitatively conducted using a field research method. The members including the leaders of Keluarga Kerukunan Tabut (KKT) and those of Tabut Pembangunan as the community handled by the government were engaged as the participants of this study. The data collection techniques deployed interviews, observations, documentation, and literature reviews. The present study revealed that the existence of Tabut’s tradition which is claimed to be a tradition originated from Shia’s teachings is able to maintain its presence in Bengkulu. This existence survives in the middle of Bengkulu’s society that is predominantly Sunni. This tradition is capable of being a peaceful path between Sunni and Shia in Bengkulu because each of them succeeds in creating social interactions through the Tabut’s tradition as human relations and the symbol they interpret. As an implication, this study highlighted that a religious or cultural activity can be a medium of social bondage in the midst of cultural diversity. This study contributes to being a reference for those who have interests in anthropological, social, and religious fields.

<div class="page" title="Page 1"><div class="layoutArea"><div class="column"><p><span>This article aims to discuss dynamics of the Sunni and Shia relations in Manado. The data were collected from interviews, observation, and documentation. This study shows that the Sunni and Shia Muslim relations in Manado lived in harmony at the grassroots level. They lived next door, visited, and also helped each other in various matters. However, the relations between Sunni and Shia had been in tension due to anti-Shia campaigns by local Sunni elites and Salafi-Wahabi groups in the public sphere that took advantage of the momentum of the Sunni-Shia conflicts in the country and also the Middle East. They also took advantage of the particular political events deemed to benefit the Shia’s existence. Although the Shia groups had become the target of hatred, it did not result in physical violence. The abuse that occurred on the Shia was of verbal and symbolic. This study concludes that the minority status does not always lead to a harmonious relationship within its own internal group.</span></p></div></div></div>
