Középvárosok élmezőnyében? Sopron fejlődésének lakossági megítélése

Abstract

Among the leaders of medium-sized towns? Citizens' perceptions about the development of Sopron Sopron has a unique role in the development of medium-sized towns in Hungary. The special position of the town is determined by the nearness of Austria, and due to the advantageous conditions of the Austrian labour market, its development path has been shaped by the increase of population, which is outstanding among medium-sized towns. In this study, some of the economic, social and environmental problems are explored that occur due the border area location. In addition, the problem perception of citizens along with the keys to resolve the problems are evaluated. Results that stem from survey research are assessed in light of the trends in development of Hungarian medium-sized towns, with special regard to three towns with same functions but different parameters (Békéscsaba, Eger and Kaposvár). On the one hand, it is concluded that the development of Sopron depends on the Austrian labour market, and the chances provided by external project funding. On the other hand, it seems evident that growing internal migration and traffic congestion have central places in citizen's perception towards urban problems. The overall conclusion is that the picture of urban development perceived by citizens and the town's outstanding rank among medium-sized town is fraudulent.
