A general kinetic model is proposed to describe the polypropylene thermal oxidation of thin polypropylene films in a wide range of temperatures (from 60 to 200 C) and oxygen partial pressures (from 0.02 to 5 MPa) using a single set of parameters.This model was calibrated with several series of experimental data including analyses of primary (hydroperoxides) and secondary oxidation products (carbonyl species), and subsequent changes in macromolecular properties (average molecular masses). It predicts the experimental data previously published in the literature in terms of induction times and maximal oxidation rates. The variability of the oxygen solubility coefficient allows to explain the scattering of induction times and oxidation rates among the whole iPP family, but also the dependence of this latter quantity with oxygen partial pressure. This variability is presumably due to iPP polymorphism in the temperature range where oxygen permeability is commonly measured. It is concluded that the kinetic model can be used to study the direct effect of iPP morphology on its thermal oxidation kinetics (chemistry of oxidation).

Zerumbone (ZER), a sesquiterpene compound occurring in tropical ginger Zingiber zerumbet Smith, has been implicated as one of the promising chemopreventive agents against colon and skin cancer. In the present study, we investigated the phase II detoxification enzymes induction of ZER using a cultured rat normal liver epithelial cell line. Exposure of RL34 cells to ZER resulted in the significant induction of glutathione S-transferase, while the reduced analogues of ZER (a-humulene and 8-hydroxy-a-humulene) did not show any inducing effect. Therefore, the electrophilic property, characterized by the reactivity with intracellular nucleophiles including protein sulfhydryls as well as low molecular weight thiols, at the 8-position a; b-unsaturated carbonyl group plays an important role in the induction of phase II enzymes. ZER induced nuclear localization of the transcription factor Nrf2 that binds to antioxidant response element (ARE) of the phase II enzyme genes, suggesting that ZER is a potential activator of the Nrf2/ARE-dependent detoxification pathway. This is consistent with the observation that ZER potentiated the gene expression of several Nrf2/ARE-dependent phase II enzyme genes, including cglutamylcysteine synthetase, glutathione peroxidase, and hemeoxygenase-1. The present study also implied the antioxidant role of this detoxification system activation by ZER in the neutralization of lipid peroxidation in hepatocytes, providing a new insight for cancer prevention.

The poly[vinylidenefluoride-co-(tetrafluoroethylene)] (P(VDF-TeFE)) / organo-modified nanodiamond (organo-ND) composite were prepared by the melt-compounding process using fluorinated crystalline polymer and organo-ND. The structure of the polymer and the structures of dispersed organo-ND particles in the polymer matrix were investigated by using an atomic force microscope (AFM). The crystallization temperature was determined using a Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). From the AFM image, the organo-ND disperses in the polymer matrix. These results suggest that organo-ND with hydrocarbon chain can be dispersed in a fluorinated copolymer. From DSC thermograms (first cooling), the crystallization peak of DSC thermograms of the composite appeared at slightly higher temperature than that of the neat P(VDF-TeFE). These results suggest that the polymer crystallizes epitaxially from organo-ND surface.
