KTK: kernel support for configurable objects and invocations

Abstract: The Kernel Tool Kit ( K T K ) is an object-based operating system kernel and parallel programming library that offers explicit support f o r on-and off-line program configuration. Specifically, K T K allows the specification of attributes f o r object classes, object instances, state variables, operations and object invocations. Attributes are interpreted by policy classes that m a y be varied separately f r o m the abstractions with which they are associated. They can be used to vary object internal implement… Show more

“…As a result, the performance of mutex locks differs across both machines, but the interface and functionality provided to application programmers does not change. The portability of Cthreads programs to non-shared memory machines is outside the scope of this paper (see [24,25,21] for our own contributions to this topic). However, to take advantage of distributed memory machines available at Georgia Tech, our group has performed an explicit port of TRANS to the IBM SP-2 parallel supercomputer.…”

“…Regis [18], KTK [8], Durra [a] a n i and Polylith [Zi] deal primarily with the problem of structural reconfiguration and the mechanisms for reconfiguration and capturing and restoring states, but except for Conic 1121 and Argus [5], they do not deal with the probem of maintaining state consistency. Systems like Conic [I21 and Argus [5] use transactions for preserving consistency.…”
