uterine contraction detection is fundamental component of pregnancy monitoring. Electrohysterogram (EHG) provides a non-invasive and accurate alternative to intra uterine pressure catheter (IUPC). EHG measures the electrical signal responsible for the uterine contractions. The signal is influenced by different artifacts, the removal of artifacts are essential for the accurate preterm birth prediction and detection. In this paper different monitoring techniques for uterine contractions and a comparison of different artifacts removal methods are also included. Keywords-EHG, Preterm contractions, Bandpass filtering, ICA. I. INTRODUCTION Preterm deliveries are the major problem in the field of obstetrics. It increases the infant mortality and morbidity rates. It is the most prominent contributor of infant deaths. By the World Health Organization (WHO) preterm birth is the onset of labor prior to the completion of 37 weeks of gestation but not beyond 20 weeks of gestation. Studies reported that India is the biggest contributor to the world prematurity burden. Preterm birth can occur due to various reasons. From studies, one of the preterm deliveries are due to medically induced labor. This type of labor is strictly undertaken for the wellbeing of mother or baby. Another reasons are rupturing of membrane, prior to the labor and due to the spontaneous contractions. Along with this several lifestyle and health factor like uterine abnormalities, infections, any invasive surgery, under weight or obese mother, long working hours, alcohol and drug use, diabetes, hypertension, folic acid deficiency will also lead to preterm labor. This indicates the need of reliable method for the early detection and prevention of preterm birth threats. Predicting and diagnosing preterm birth before it occurs generate a great interest because of its importance. Analysis of electrical activity of uterine muscles termed as Electrohysterography (EHG) or uterine Electromyography (EMG). EHG signal results from the propagation of electrical activity and gives the potential difference between the electrodes. There were several studies done to detect and predict preterm labor using EHG signal. Preprocessed EHG data is undergone with the feature extraction and classification process. Accuracy, specificity and sensitivity are the common performance metrics used in the related works. In this work we were included different artifact removal methods. Most of the authors were used filtering as an artifacts removal method [1] and also a new method using ICA is also discussed here. II. MONITORING UTERINE CONTRACTIONS Labor is the culmination of a period of pregnancy with the expulsion of one or more infants from a woman's uterus. The process of normal delivery is categorized in three stages of labor: the shortening and dilation of the cervix, descent and birth of the infant, and the expulsion of the placenta. This indicates the need of efficient technique to monitor the uterine contractions. Tocography is the technique used to monitor uterine contractions. I...
