Objective This article presents the french validation of a hope assessment scale for use in an international study on the mental health of Swiss and Portuguese students during a pandemic (Querido et al., 2021). is The original hope assessment scale is the Herth Hope Index (HHI) (Herth, 1991) which measures different dimensions of hope and assesses the state of motivation to overcome situations with strong stressful or life-threatening components. Methods Our methodology is divided into two main steps. The first step aims at evaluating the qualitative aspects of the assessment tool. We will use a literal translation and a cultural adaptation through cross-cultural validation. We will start with a back-translation method for the translation and preparation of a draft version. Then, we will evaluate the draft by selecting a committee of experts and a sample of "end-users" to correct the initial translation and produce a consensus version. The second part will concern the evaluation of the psychometric and metrological qualities of the instrument. We will set up a method of parallel/equivalent form reliability and tests of convergent/divergent validity with other tools assessing similar constructs. Results We obtained a consensus from our expert panel (n=7) after our back-translation. We then tested the translation on a pilot group of students (n=13) in order to highlight potential comprehension problems. We obtained CVIs >.80 for all of our items in the second test run, which indicates that the translation is understood and accepted by the subjects. We also measured the concurrent validity between the HHI-F (target instrument) and other scales (criterion instruments) measuring the same phenomena, which were administered simultaneously to our subjects (i.e. DASS-21, IES-R and BRCS). The results suggest good translation validity of the HHI-F: systematically negative correlations between the HHI-F and the DASS-21 (r= -.562; p=000); all correlations between the IES-R and the HHI-F are negative  (r= -.301; p=000) and all correlations between the HHI-F scale and the BRCS are positive (r= .552; p=000). Discussion The french version of the Herth Hope Index (HHI) is translated. Validation of the qualitative and quantitative criteria was carried out and the results show that the French version (HHI-F) has sufficiently strong fidelity and validity criteria to be used in practice.

Intérêt et objectif de l’étude : Notre étude vise à évaluer la santé psychologique chez les étudiants primo-inscrits de l’université de Sfax. Nous voulons identifier certains facteurs psychosociaux qui peuvent impacter leur santé. Méthodes : Il s’agit d’une étude longitudinale qui s’est déroulée sur deux temps. Notre échantillon est composé de 344 étudiants primo-inscrits dans des filières scientifiques et littéraires. Ils ont été sollicités au début et à la fin de l’année universitaire 2017-2018. Seulement 252 étudiants ont participé à la deuxième phase de la recherche. Des échelles ont été traduites en arabe pour répondre aux objectifs de la recherche. Résultats : Les données indiquent que 42.7% des étudiants interrogés présentent des signes de détresse psychologique. Nos résultats révèlent que plusieurs facteurs sont associés à cette détresse d’une manière statistiquement significative, à savoir la satisfaction des conditions socio-économiques, le choix de la filière (subi ou choisi), la satisfaction du soutien social et des conditions de l’hébergement au campus universitaire. Certains facteurs transactionnels sont corrélés d’une manière significative à notre variable dépendante la santé psychologique, à savoir le stress perçu et les stratégies d’ajustement ainsi que certains facteurs dispositionnels comme l’estime de soi, le névrosisme et l’espoir. L’analyse de régression multiple indique que l’estime de soi et le névrosisme expliquent, respectivement à 31% et à 7%, la variance santé psychologique. Les résultats de l’étude longitudinale montrent l’amélioration générale de l’état de santé des étudiants interrogés lors du deuxième moment de l’étude avec un impact statistiquement significatif des facteurs de l’estime de soi et du coping centré sur la résolution des problèmes et l’espoir Conclusion : Un travail d’accompagnement psychologique est nécessaire pour les étudiants vulnérables. Des actions de promotion de la santé mentale en milieu universitaire sont fortement conseillées. Interest and objective of the study: Our study aims to assess the psychological health of new students enrolled at the University of Sfax and to identify certain psychosocial factors that can impact their health. Methods: A longitudinal study was carried out over two parts. A total of 344 first-registered students enrolled in science and literature courses were contacted at the beginning and end of the 2017-2018 academic year. Only 252 of these students took part in the study's second part. Scales were translated into Arabic to meet the research objectives. Results: According to the data, 42.7% of the students assessed exhibit symptoms of psychological discomfort. Our results revealed that several factors were significantly associated with this distress. These variables included the satisfaction of socio-economic conditions, the choice of the sector (submitted or deliberate), the satisfaction of social support, and the conditions of the school and the accommodation at the university campus. Some relational factors, such as perceived stress and coping mechanisms, as well as some personality traits like self-esteem, neuroticism, and hope, are substantially connected with our dependent variable "psychological health". According to a multiple regression analysis, neuroticism and self-esteem account for 31% and 7%, respectively, of the variance in psychological health. Additionally, the state of health of the students questioned during the second moment was generally improved involving the factors of self-esteem and coping centered on the resolution of problems and hope. Conclusion: Psychological support, using protective factors, plays an important role in preventing the transition from distress to psychiatric disorders.
