Considering that orthognathic surgery promotes changes in orofacial structures constituting the resonating system, functional changes secondary to surgery are expected to affect speech, leading to the need for further speech and voice adjustments. Thus, understanding the possible relationships of these structures with voice production is important. Therefore, this study aimed to describe the changes in voice fundamental frequency of a patient submitted to orthognathic surgery and observe if there is a relationship with hyoid bone positioning at the different treatment periods. The results revealed that voice fundamental frequency increased after surgery, returning to values close to the preoperative condition, which corresponded to vertical movement of the hyoid bone.

The hyoid is a U shaped bone with a backward concavity. Locates at the lower edge of the mandible and lies parallel to the floor — functions as an attachment point for muscles and soft tissues of head and neck. The aim is to examine the variations and ossification of the hyoid. This study was performed retrospectively in 2010 - 2013 on 200 CT images. 3D volume rendering images of pure hyoid bone created from the axial CT images in 1 mm slice thickness. The morphological variation count was 23; ossification variations were 9 cases. No difference observed by gender, but there are differences between the age groups for ossification. Ossification rates were found as; partial 34 %, unilateral 33%, complete 22%, early 11%. Most of the morphologic variation were belong to minor horn (57%), variations of major horn were 30%. The clinical importance of hyoid bone has realized in recent years. Due to the close relationship of this bone with the muscles, ligaments, fascias, sternum, clavicles, its dysfunction can lead to general problems. Studies about the variations of hyoid bone found to be quite low, and we believe that our research will contribute to the content of literature.

Relationship between morphological characteristics of hyoid bone and mandible in Japanese cadavers using three-dimensional computed tomography

The aim of this study is to obtain a quantitative anatomical description of the hyoid bone and mandible using three-dimensional computed tomography. Hyoid bones were obtained from a total of 101 cadavers varying in age from 67 to 102 years. The percentage of symmetrical U-type and asymmetrical-type hyoid bones was low compared with symmetrical V type (14.9, 15.8, and 69.3 %, respectively), and no significant sex difference was observed. We found bilateral nonfusion in cadavers of advanced age at a rate of 22.7 % and bilateral complete fusion at a rate of 51.5 %. There were significant differences in metric variables (length and width) between males and females, but no significant differences in width among the different fusion types. There was no significant interaction effect of sex and degree of fusion. Strong significant associations were observed between size (length and width) of the hyoid bone and mandible in the nonfusion group, while the complete fusion group revealed a moderate correlation. We also investigated the hypothesis that the junction between the hyoid body and greater horn plays an important role in the movement of bones that have not yet ossified. However, no statistical difference was observed in the width between the two greater horns. The degree of fusion of the greater horn with the hyoid body may also affect relations of interdependencies between the hyoid bone and mandible, an important component to consider when assessing risk factors in the development of masticatory and swallowing function.
