Abstract: This is a memoir relating how the author became a geomicrobiologist and how he practiced his specialty. Born in Germany and receiving his early schooling in Berlin, he completed his secondary education, followed by college and graduate school training, after emigration to the United States in 1940. After attaining a PhD degree in 1951, he spent his entire professional career as a faculty member of the Department of Biology at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in Troy, New York.
