With this essay on decolonizing ways of knowing, I seek to understand the phantom histories of my father’s French family. Filling in silences in written family accounts with scholarship on Marseille’s maritime commerce, African history, African Diaspora studies, and my own archival research, I seek to reconnect European, African, and Caribbean threads of my family story. Travelling from New Orleans to Marseille, Zanzibar, Ouidah, Porto-Novo, Martinique and Guadeloupe, this research at the intersections of personal and collective heritage links critical genealogies to colonial processes that structured the Atlantic world. Through an exploration of family documents, literature, and art, I travel the trade routes of la Maison Régis.

Cet article est consacré à l’analyse des numéros et des interventions du journal Vé (impératif à la 2e personne du singulier du verbe provençal “vèire” signifiant “voir”) dans le Marseille des années 1980, une conjoncture où le Front National s’affirme comme une force politique de premier ordre. Deux types de démarches identifiables dans le journal sont caractérisées: d’un côté la contribution à l’expression des différentes communautés et à la visibilité de la diversité d’une scène culturelle, que l’on présente avec la figure de l’arc-en-ciel; d’un autre côté, la figure de “l’aïoli” caractérise le brouillage des différences au profit d’une hybridation des pratiques et des identités dans la formation d’une alliance multiculturelle, offrant une base de dialogue avec l’intersectionnalité.
