Background: The use of antitussives is a crucial issue in pediatrics and can lead to respiratory complications that can affect the prognosis. Objectives: to determine the frequency of respiratory complications associated with the use of an-titussives in pediatrics in a remote city in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Method: This is a cross-sectional retrospective study conducted between January 1, 2017 and De-cember 2022. Patients under 12 years of age with an acute cough were eligible. The parameters studied were treatment with cough suppressants and associated respiratory complications. Results: A total of 218 children suffered from an acute cough. The average age was 11 months 10, the sex ratio (H/F) was 126/92. In 30% of cases, children were treated with cough suppressants for an average of 7 days prior to admission. Respiratory complications were observed in 11% (23/218) of cases. The majority of these complications, 61% (14 of 23), had received antitussive treatment prior to hospitalization. Respiratory complications were associated with cough medications (p-value = 0.0012, relative risk (RR) = 3.66, IC90 [1.696; 7,873]). Acute respiratory distress was reported in 87% (20/23) of cases and was associated with the use of cough suppressants (p-value = 0.0065, RR: 3.060, IC90: [1.433; 6,485]). Conclusion: The use of antitussives in pediatrics poses a risk of acute respiratory distress in a remote city that does not have sufficient human and material resources for management. HemoTypeSC TM test is a new cheap, faster, and appropriate screening method for neonatal diagnosis of sickle cell disease. The literature reports a few cases of its applicability. This study extends the cases study and reviews the available literature. The sample consisted of 99 subjects, including 87 newborns (36 girls and 51 boys; 1.9-4.9 kg BW) sampled among 566 babies bone at six hospitals in Kisangani city (Democratic Republic of Congo) during March-April 2019; height infant-adolescents (<18 years); and four adults. Duplicate blood samples of 75 newborns, spotted on filter paper, were transferred to Liège in Belgium for LC-MS test confirmation. Of 99 subjects, 74.74% tested HbAA, 24.26% HbAS and 1% HbSS. The prevalence of HbAS compared to the HbAA phenotype was 15/60 (20%) by HemoTypeSC TM and 14/61 (18.7%) by LC-MS. The concordance between the two methods was 98.3% or a discordance of 1.7%. The findings support the validity of the HemoTypeSC TM test as a sensitive, specific point of care test, cheap and reliable for poor African populations.
