The fossil record of the Canidae in North-western Africa begins near the Miocene-Pliocene boundary with a form close to Nyctereutes, a genus best known in the late Pliocene of Ahl al Oughlam. This site yields two other canids. Vulpes hassani sp. nov. is a small fox, probably ancestral to the modern V. rueppelli, recorded from the Middle Pleistocene onwards. Lupulella paralius sp. nov. is a primitive jackal that probably belongs to the clade of modern African jackals. In the middle Pleistocene, the most common canid is Lupulella mohibi sp. nov., remarkable by its Nyctereutes-like dentition and primitive skull-features. These are all endemic forms, but V. vulpes and C. aureus, of northern origin, appear in the course of the middle Pleistocene. Lycaon has a sparse record in the middle and late Pleistocene.

“…The Middle to Late Pleistocene boundary is characterized by the extinction of numerous small mammal taxa, including all the fossil shrew species (Stoetzel, 2013). During the Late Pleistocene, most of the present Moroccan species were recorded from several Late Pleistocene and Holocene sites, such as Irhoud Neanderthal (Jaeger, 1970(Jaeger, , 1975Amani and Geraads, 1998), Oulad Hamida 2 (Felids cave; Raynal et al, 2008;Geraads et al, 2010), Chrafate (Ouabhi et al, 2003), Ez Zarka (Ouabhi et al, 2003), Guenfouda (Aouraghe et al, 2010;Lopez-García et al, 2013), and El Harhoura 2 (Stoetzel, 2009;Stoetzel et al, 2010Stoetzel et al, , 2011. As for difference number one (absolute size), Table 2 shows that the difference between both species is far from clear cut; furthermore, size difference between two layers of a single upper Pleistocene site (DBA Félins: Raynal et al, 2008), unlikely to document the replacement of one species by another, is sharper than between the two species. We agree with Stoetzel (2009) that more remains to be done of the systematics of modern and fossil North-African Meriones, but we believe that the distinction of a fossil form called M. maghrebianus hides the complexity of biometric evolution in this group and should be avoided.…”

The rodents from the late middle Pleistocene hominin-bearing locality of J'bel Irhoud include the following species: Meriones shawii, Gerbillus grandis, Dipodillus campestris, Paraethomys ras, Lemniscomys barbarus, Mus cf. spretus, and Eliomys sp. We consider M. shawii, a living species, as identical with the middle Pleistocene Meriones maghrebianus. The mouse differs from the domestic Mus musculus but does not clearly fit into Mus spretus, either. The rare G. grandis looks identical with the form from the middle Pleistocene of Thomas quarries, which may suggest a rather early age for Irhoud. This is in agreement with the occurrence of Paraethomys, a genus unknown in the upper Pleistocene of Morocco, but the absence of the arvicolid Ellobius suggests that the site is younger than other middle Pleistocene sites, Doukkala II, Sidi Abderrahmane D2, and Irhoud-Derbala-Virage. Paleoecological indicators, such as the taxonomic habitat spectrum, or the relative abundances of Gerbillinae and Murinae, suggest a less xeric environment than in many earlier and later sites. Diversity indices, comparable to those of other middle Pleistocene sites, point to similarly favorable conditions before the major climatic crisis close to the middle/upper Pleistocene boundary that drastically reduced rodent diversity in North Africa.
