La réémergence du chikungunya à La Réunion en 2010: évolution des actions de lutte antivectorielle

Abstract: The re-emergence of local transmission of chikungunya virus caused by Aedes albopictus since March 2010 in the Réunion Island, French territory in the southwest Indian Ocean, calls for better epidemiological surveys, vector control, and community-based chikungunya control. This paper describes the strategy and the new ways of vector control applied since the last major chikungunya virus outbreak in 2005-2007, and the high levels of collaboration with mayors and local associations for community involvement. “…Although the use of mosquito repellents on skin and clothing is generally considered effective in preventing Chikungunya, its sociodemographic and behavioral correlates, particularly among US travelers to Caribbean destinations, has remained largely understudied. Dehecq et al 17 suggested that the evaluation of Chikungunya transmission risk should be extended beyond traditional entomologic indices to include individual and environmental risk factors.…”

“…In Reunion, since 2007, vector control programs are performed using Bti ( Bacillus thuringiensis var. israelensis toxins) for larval control and deltamethrin (pyrethroids) against adults [ 58 ]. In Mauritius, in addition to deltamethrin-based adulticide treatments, temephos (organophosphate) is used against larvae.…”

“…The great epidemics of dengue and malaria occurred in the last years were an example [5]- [7]. Moreover, the epidemics by the chikungunya virus spread by Aedes albopictus and Aedes aegypti mosquitoes in the isles La Reunion and Mauricius during [2005][2006], with an estimated of 266,000 infected persons and 248 deaths [8] and the one occurred in the summer of 2007 in Italy, where more than 200 cases were diagnosed [9] [10].…”
