“…In the RE industry, controversies over social impacts have driven widespread SIA adoption, yet problematic implementations have also made SIA controversial, fueling academic interest. Research provides vital insights into companies’ SIA control and instrumentalization (Colvin et al, 2019; Mekaoui and Baños-Ramírez, 2021), methodological gaps for specific social impacts (Hanna et al, 2019; Larsen et al, 2018; Luthra et al, 2015; Martins-Godinho et al, 2022), participatory and local knowledge models limitations (Cashmore et al, 2019; Khan, 2020), and constraints related to companies’ SIA practices, design, and management (Engelbrecht, 2022; Martinez and Komendantova, 2020; Rousseau, 2017). Furthermore, in highly socially unequal and vulnerable contexts, the theoretical foundations for their assessment remain underdeveloped, while power imbalances and barriers to participation can steer SIA implementation toward securing project approval rather than comprehensively assessing and managing impacts (Aledo and Domínguez-Gómez, 2017; Esteves et al, 2012).…”
