Lab-on-Mask for Remote Respiratory Monitoring

Abstract: A smart mask integrated with a remote, noncontact multiplexed sensor system, or “Lab-on-Mask” (LOM) is designed for monitoring respiratory diseases, such as the COVID-19. This LOM can monitor the heart rate, blood oxygen saturation, blood pressure, and body temperature associated with symptoms of pneumonia caused by coronaviruses in real time. Because of this remote monitoring system, frontline healthcare staff can minimize the exposure they face from close contact with the patients and reduce the risks of bei… Show more

“…Various solutions have been proposed to combat the spread of the virus, including sanitization [ 1 ]. Other novel and interesting solutions to handle the pandemic have also come up, such as the use of ionizer plants to enhance ventilation or a smart mask to monitor the vital signs of COVID-19 patients [ 2 , 3 ]. However, there has been no other more urgent need than the increasing need for personal protective equipment (PPE).…”

“…While smart masks can be a mix of many different technologies, in general smart masks have the ability to achieve advanced protection capabilities by optimizing the various build materials, filtering mechanisms, and integrated sensors, and other technologies [24][25][26][27][28]. The monitoring and measuring functionalities can provide various feedback to the user while enabling other permitted third parties such as healthcare professionals to remotely monitor the situation [25]. In addition, one of the main benefits of smart masks are their reusability [26].…”
