Labdanum Resin from Cistus ladanifer L.: A Natural and Sustainable Ingredient for Skin Care Cosmetics with Relevant Cosmeceutical Bioactivities

Abstract: Labdanum resin from Cistus ladanifer L. (Cistaceae) is an abundant natural resource in the Iberian Peninsula worth being explored in a sustainable manner. It is already used in the cosmetic industry; mainly by the fragrances/perfumery sector. However, given the highest market share and traditional uses, labdanum resin also has the potential to be used and valued as a cosmetic ingredient for skincare. Aiming to evaluate this potential, labdanum methanolic absolute and fractions purified by column chromatography… Show more

“…After cooling, a H 2 SO 4 solution (5 M) was added dropwise to the extract, under agitation, until reaching pH 2. The precipitated resin was separated from the supernatant by centrifugation, at 3030× g for 15 min (Mega Star 600R, VWR; Alfragide, Portugal), and finally freeze-dried [21].…”

“…Recently, labdanum resin was revealed to have high anti-inflammatory activity, mainly due to the content in flavonoid aglycones, a property assessed by the inhibition of nitric oxide release by LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells (a macrophage cell line), and also revealed antioxidant properties [21]. This activity may explain several traditional medicinal applications enumerated above.…”

“…Today, diverse strategies are being implemented to mitigate this impact and promote enhanced environmental consciousness. One of these strategies involves promoting natural extracts rich in antioxidant compounds as active ingredients as these represent a sustainable and eco-friendly alternative for pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries [ 5 ], especially for skincare product development [ 6 ], including sunscreens [ 7 , 8 ] and antimicrobial agents [ 9 , 10 ].…”
