In this article, I discuss compulsory genital examinations in Swedish African, mainly Somali, girls. The discussion is based on data from 122 police files, including criminal investigations regarding suspected "female genital mutilation" (FGM). A growing body of research in European countries indicates that processes of cultural change are occurring among immigrant communities from areas where traditionally girls are subjected to what is construed as "circumcision". Many studies show growing opposition to these practices among people who have migrated to Europe, and there is little evidence to support the assertion that largescale illegal activities are prevalent. Yet there is a dominant discourse stating that FGM is secretively practised on a large scale among some immigrant groups in Europe, and policies encourage the detection of cases to charge in criminal court. I describe the current situation in Sweden and highlight some of the drawbacks of a very harsh, although well-intended, policy to check for FGM in Europe. While the ultimate aim is to protect girls at risk for FGM, current policies have ramifications that are invasive and sometimes even traumatising for the girls involved. This paper offers an empirical example of how politics in western multicultural societies may negatively influence the sexual health and rights of a target group, in this case, girls and young women whose families originate from countries where circumcision of girls is practiced.

Background: Labioplasty is a form of genital surgery to reduce large or protruding labia minora. Internationally, the rates of this surgery among women and girls is increasing and is viewed as a worrying trend. Currently, the main clinical strategy is to reassure adolescents that they are normal by talking about the variation of labia size and appearance and showing pictures demonstrating the wide range of normal female genital appearance. For the most part, policy documents recommend against labipolasty in adolescents, claiming that it is medically non-essential surgery. In this paper, we contrast findings from our interviews with clinicians with the existing literature and policy documents and we point out areas needing more thought. Methods: This is qualitative research using semi-structured interviews. We set out to find out on what basis clinicians decide how to treat or manage adolescent patients seeking labioplasty. We interviewed clinicians who are likely to be approached by under 18s requesting labioplasty. We use interpretive content analysis and thematic analysis to analyse the data. Results: Our findings support the emphasis on education and reassurance as the first step for all patients, but other issues that have not figured previously in the literature, that would alter clinical strategies for managing patients come out as well.

Dieser Beitrag erl?utert die m?glichen Folgen der weiblichen Genitalverst?mmelung (englisch Female Genital Mutilation, FGM) in physischer, psychischer und sozialgesellschaftlicher Hinsicht. Dazu geh?rt die komplexe soziokulturelle Verwurzelung dieser Praktik. Um entw?rdigende Situationen mit potenziell Betroffenen zu vermeiden, ist ein angemessener und respektvoller Umgang mit dieser Tradition notwendig. In der reisemedizinischen Fachberatung ist das Thema insbesondere dann wichtig, wenn Familien mit Kindern in ihr Herkunftsland reisen und dort FGM praktiziert wird. Weiterhin beeinflusst FGM auch die Gesellschaften, in denen ?ber diese Praktik gesprochen und berichtet wird. Das zeigt sich aktuell an der steigenden Nachfrage f?r ?sthetische Eingriffe im Genitalbereich ohne eine medizinische Indikation.
