“…Cardiovascular and metabolic diseases such as hypertension, diabetes mellitus (DM) and hyperlipidemia, will reduce the elasticity of blood vessels and induce the formation of atherosclerosis, thus causing microangiopathy. Several studies have confirmed these findings, suggesting that these comorbidities are clinically associated with ISSNHL 10,11 .…”

“…In addition, another study reported that in comparison with healthy controls, higher levels of blood glucose, glycated hemoglobin (HbA1C), lipoprotein (a), and factor VIII were found among ISSNHL patients. The moderate-severe ISSNHL (PTA > 40 dB HL) patients showed higher significant values of blood glucose, glycated hemoglobin (HbA1C), uric acid, factor VIII, and homocysteine than mild ISSNHL (PTA ≤ 40 dB HL) patients 10 . All these laboratory parameters reflect the patients' metabolic and thrombophilic states and are considered to be the possible factors involved in a vascular etiology of ISSNHL.…”

“…[1][2][3] In SSNHL development, vascular, infectious, autoimmune, traumatic, metabolic, hematologic, and neurological mechanisms have been suggested and is still being discussed. [3][4][5][6] Advanced ages, vertigo at the onset, degree of hearing loss, audiometric configuration, duration between onset, and treatment are known to be important for the prognosis. [2][3][4] On the other hand, the prevalence of hearing loss is reported to be high in males, Caucasians, smokers, and patients with older age, low educational level, diabetes mellitus (DM), and hypertension (HT).…”

“…2,3 Unfortunately, Fasano et al 1 did not report the treatment regimen in their case series and its temporal relationship with the laboratory assessment, but it is rational to assume that most of patients underwent steroid therapy. Blood samples were collected from the SSHL patients within 20 days from the onset of symptoms, 1 and that could hypothetically be before, during, or shortly after the steroid treatment. This is an important matter, as corticosteroids are known to elevate blood glucose levels, and more interestingly, may stimulate factor VIII secretion.…”
