Laboratory Characterization of a Compacted–Unsaturated Silty Sand with Special Attention to Dynamic Behavior

Abstract: The dynamic properties of compacted non-cohesive soils are desired not only because of the risk of natural sources of dynamic excitations such as earthquakes, but mostly because of the anthropogenic impact of machines that are working on such soils. These soils are often unsaturated, which positively affects the soil’s mechanical properties. The information about the values of these parameters is highly desirable for engineers. In this article, we performed a series of tests, including oedometric tests, resona… Show more

“…Finally, the minimum value of D min recorded across the sites ranged between 1.98% and 2.51% with RC test and 5.73% and 7.45% with BE test, while the maximum value was between 11.09% and 12.89% with RC test and 16.03% and 18.54% with BE test. Again, the values of shear modulus and damping ratio obtained from the BE test were higher than those from the RC test at all confinement Gluchowski et al (2020). equally observed these scenarios, though, at different confinements.…”

“…The different trends can be explained by the different sand behaviors (linear elastic, elastoplastic, and plastic) along with a small strain ranging from 10 −6 to 10 −3 . Głuchowski et al [19] reported an increase in the maximum shear modulus for the unsaturated silty clay soil due to the limited suction increase up to 200 kPa.…”

“…Głuchowski et al researched the laboratory characterization of a compacted-unsaturated silty sand. The results proposed that the compaction procedure caused an overconsolidation state dependent on the moisture content during compaction effort [15]. Feng et al used the resonance column test to evaluate the influence of confining pressure, mix ratio, curing age, and cement content on the dynamic characteristics of subsea sand-silt mixtures [16].…”
