Laboratory investigation of adult small ruminant Leptospirosis, a neglected infection in Greece: problems and recommendations

Abstract: ABSTRACT. Leptospirosis is in Greece a neglected infection. Small ruminants and specifically sheep are accidental hosts ofLeptospira spp, but they could also be disseminators of pathogenic serovars. Thus, the objective was to investigate leptospirosis of adult small ruminants coming from areas in Southern Greece, where accidental evidence had showed that leptospirosis could be an important infection for man and animals. For this purpose, blood and kidney samples were collected at slaughter from adult females. … Show more

“…In the present study, cross reactions cannot be ruled out since the incriminated pathogens in humans, i.e., Rickettsia, Babesia, Leptospira also infect sheep triggering immune response. The first two hemoparasites were neither cytologically or serologically detected in sheep included in this study, while Leptospira is rather infrequent in Greece and mainly associated with abortions [54], although it cannot be excluded. Moreover, farmers did not report severe rodent infestation.…”
