Laboratory medicine and medical oncology: the tale of two Cinderellas

Abstract: Cancer represents a leading cause of death in the developed countries. The past 50 years have witnessed major progress in both laboratory medicine and clinical oncology that has translated into improved prognosis of cancer patients. From the humble beginnings as unrelated specialties, major advances in the understanding of molecular bases of cancer progression led to increased interactions between laboratory medicine and clinical (mostly medical) oncology. Laboratory medicine is now an integral part of the man… Show more

“…The involvement of physicians of different specialties has resulted in cure rates that were not imaginable only few decades ago. Among other specialties, laboratory medicine plays an increasingly important role in defining the therapeutic strategy and daily management of cancer patients (1). The importance of laboratory medicine is increasing with the advent of targeted therapy that has transformed the treatment of many tumors.…”

“…Predictive biomarkers play an increasingly important role in medical oncology 39 , but, unfortunately, there is currently no information on clinical, pathological or laboratory predictive factors and/or biomarkers that might help in identifying HCC patients likely to benefit from HAI. One important set of biomarkers is associated with the immune response.…”
