Laboratory methods and quality assurance in the Cardiovascular Health Study

Abstract: The Cardiovascular Health Study is an observational cohort study of risk factors for cardiovascular disease in 5201 participants, ages > or = 65 years. We report the methods and quality-assurance results for blood procurement, processing, shipping, storage, and sample analysis used during the first examination period (May 1989-June 1990). The most frequent difficulty in phlebotomy and processing was the requirement of more than one venipuncture (in 2.6% of the participants). The CVs for control material… Show more

“…Baseline serum albumin was measured by a Kodak Ektachem 700 analyser with reagents (Eastman Kodak, Rochester, NY, USA). 11 Hypoalbuminaemia was defined as serum albumin ≤3.5 g/dL. 12 Data on socio-demographic, clinical, sub-clinical, and laboratory variables were collected at baseline and have been previously described in detail.…”

“…The F5 (Factor V Leiden; A1691G, R506Q) (de Ronde & Bertina, 1994) and the F2 (prothrombin) G20210A polymorphisms (Poort et al, 1996) were also assessed. Factor VIII coagulant activity (FVIII:C) was measured as previously reported (Cushman et al, 1995;Folsom et al, 1997). Plasma protein C level was only available in the ARIC sample and was measured as reported (Folsom et al, 2002c).…”
