Laboratory tests of a typical fatigue prone riveted steel railway bridge structural detail

Abstract: There are still a lot of riveted steel railway bridges built in the first half of 20th century in service, and so it is important to pay attention to their evaluation. Their fatigue resistance represents one of the most determining factors on decision making process oriented to possibility of their further exploitation after finishing their planned service life. The standard method of fatigue assessment according to Eurocode EN 1993-1-9 [1] is based on categorization of structural details, which reflects their… Show more

“…Figure 2a shows a typical stringer-to-floor beam connection that exists in several in-service aged highway and railway bridges [41][42][43][44][45]. The out-of-plane distortion of the connection induces secondary stress concentrations in the connection.…”

“…Geometrical imperfections are important in slender members and thin walled steel structures, see e.g. (Kotelko et al 2008;Melcher et al 2009, Ungureanu et al 2010Gocál et al 2010). In the case of massive concrete structures and geotechnical engineering works it is important to properly identify the material characteristics, see e.g.…”

“…This is an important aspect for compliance with the data in [5][6][7][8]. Gocál et al [25] report on six fatigue tests on riveted connections designed to represent the connection of the cross girder to the main girder as commonly built in steel railway bridges. A fourth publication [26] on fatigue tests on riveted members conducted recently at the Graz University of Technology was of less relevance in this context The statistical evaluation results in the proposal for a fatigue class catalogue for riveted components as shown in Tab.…”

“…Three more publications with relevant data on the fatigue behaviour of riveted connections were found as a supplement to the existing database considering references up to the year 2007 [5][6][7][8]. The content of those three references [23][24][25] is revisited briefly. In reference [23], Mayorga et al report on fatigue tests conducted on specimens of three riveted bridges in Portugal and France made of puddle steel.…”
