Lack of clinicopathologic correlation in the diagnosis of oral lichen planus based on the presently available diagnostic criteria and suggestions for modifications

Abstract: Based on the findings of the present study, there appears to be a lack of clinicopathologic correlation in the diagnostic assessment of OLP. We therefore propose a set of revised diagnostic criteria of OLP and oral lichenoid lesions, based on the WHO definition of OLP, including clinical as well as histopathologic aspects.

“…Therefore, oral lichenoid lesions (OLLs) were excluded. The diagnosis of the lesions in this patient was made based on the modified criteria of van der Meij et al 16 Moreover, the lesions in this case showed no signs of oral candidiasis and there was no presence of any contributing factors causing Candida infection in this patient. Finally, the definite diagnosis of her oral lesions from 2 biopsies together with the oral manifestations confirmed OLP.…”

“…To the best of our knowledge, no one reported so far the association between OLP and HT. most recent diagnostic criteria [3]. All patients were screened for the presence of IgG anti-HCV antibodies by third-generation ELISA, and positive results were confirmed by means of second-generation RIBA.…”

“…Therefore, a higher rate of disagreement observed for cases of lichen planus could be an expected finding, mainly in relation to oral leukoplakia 21 . The differential diagnosis between these pathologic entities may be difficult, particularly when clinical and histopathologic findings are not compatible 20,22 . However, the high performance for the oral immunologically mediated lesions group in the diagnostic tests indicates that dentists had reasonable skills to diagnose this group of lesions.…”
