Lack of effect of atenolol on the pharmacokinetics of theophylline.

Abstract: mg kg-' i.v. aminophylline under baseline conditions and after both 50 mg day-1 and 100 mg day-1 atenolol. Theophylline clearance, volume of distribution and half-life were not influenced by atenolol pretreatment. These data indicate that cardioselective doses of atenolol do not alter the pharmacokinetics of theophylline.

“…The results confirm previous work (Cerasa et al, 1988) showing that atenolol, when administered in routinely used doses does not affect the metabolism of theophylline. In addition, this study indicates that nadolol is also without effect.…”

“…We have noted a 33% decrease in theophylline clearance with propranolol, which could not be reversed by concurrent terbutaline administration (Lombardi etal., 1987). In addition, our current, as well as our previous, findings show no effect of atenolol on theophylline pharmacokinetics (Cerasa et al, 1988). This suggests that lipophilicity may be the important factor in determining inhibition of theophylline metabolism by 1Badrenoceptor antagonists.…”
