“…In sys temic lupus erythematosus, antibodies have been shown to react with 'suppressor' T lymphocytes (Tv cells) [2,7,9] and it has been suggested that increased IgE levels in atopy are related to a defect in suppres sor T-cell function [5]. While it is tempting to specu late that the 'antibody' described in the preliminary study exerts an effect on suppressor cell function it should, however, be noted that the levels of EA-ro sette inhibition were similar in both extrinsic and in trinsic bronchial asthma, the latter not being charac terised by elevated IgE levels.…”

“…This subset has been shown to exhibit diminished activity in eczema, active lupus erythaematosus and inflammatory bowel disease (Ogdan, Krueger & Hill, 1979;Miller & Schwartz, 1979;Hodgson, Wands & lsselbacher, 1978). In bronchial asthma Goldman et al (1974) have shown reduced numbers of T cells together with eosinophilia and increased IgE levels, and Stranneg&rd, Lindholm & Strannegard (1976) found decreased T-cell function in children with this disease. Circumstantial evidence such as elevated IgE levels in anergic patients with the Wiskott-Aldrieh syndrome (Waldman et al, 1972) and patients with the Di George syndrome (Kikkawa et al, 1973) support the concept of a correlation between suppressor T cells and the reaginic response.…”
