Lacrimal Duct Occlusion for the Treatment of Dry Eye

Abstract: The most widespread treatment for dry eyes in clinical practice is an instillation containing artificial tear fluid. When an instillation does not ameliorate dry eye, we use punctal plugs. The insertion of punctal plugs is an eminent curative that positively improves the corneal and conjunctival epithelial disorders and the amount of lacrimal fluid accumulated in the conjunctival sac. We shall introduce the lacrimal duct occlusion utilizing atelocollagen solutions, which solves many of the issues induced by co… Show more

“…Intra-canalicular plugs may predispose to infection by leading to stasis or obstruction of tear flow, whereas punctal plugs may lead to the formation of biofilms [5][6][7][8][9]. In addition, despite the fact that punctal/intra-canalicular plugs are designed to be inert, it remains possible that they may act as a foreign body inciting a localised inflammatory reaction, thereby increasing the risk of infection within the canaliculus.…”

“…Canaliculitis is a recognised complication of punctal plugs, but has not previously been described following insertion of newer generation intra-canalicular plugs such as the SmartPLUG [5][6][7][8][9]. We report a case of bilateral canaliculitis following SmartPLUG insertion for dry eye post LASIK surgery.…”

“…Many investigators have published reviews of punctal plug use for dry eye syndrome (Hamano 2005; Marcet 2015; Yellepeddi 2015; Jehangir 2016). Nevertheless, these reviews do not include meta-analyses of randomized controlled trials or other comparative studies.…”

“…Insertion of puncta plugs has been reported to improve disorders related to inflammation of conjunctival and corneal epithelial cells [10], and also improve vision for dry eye patients [11]. While puncta plugs are useful, these suffer from the drawback of patient discomfort, difficulty of insertion and potential loss of plug during wear.…”
