Lactate dehydrogenase in synovial fluid diagnostic evaluation of total activity and isoenzyme patterns.

Abstract: The work of Ropes and Bauer (1953) has focused attention on the analysis of synovial fluid in the differential diagnosis of joint effusion. White blood cell total and differential counts, glucose assay, and mucin precipitation tests have thus all been applied to the distinction of non-inflammatory, mild inflammatory, severe inflammatory, and infectious effusions. These analyses do not, however, indicate the true origin of the effusion, and we have carried out this investigation to find out whether differential… Show more

“…Total IDH In each of the three groups studied plasma was found to contain approximately 5-7 times the level of LDH activity observed in respective synovial fluids (Table l). Cohen (1964) and Veys and Wieme (1968) in their studies of blood and synovial fluid in various human arthritides inferred that synovial fluid and blood LDH levels were approximately the same. This lack of agreement between human and swine data may be attributable to ontogenetic variformity (Hinks and Masters, 1966).…”

“…A comparison of total synovial fluid LDH activity I ( been attributed to increased production by synovial lining cells and/or contribution to total activity by leukocytes within synovial tissues and fluid (West et al, 1963;Jasani e^ aJ^., 1967;Kerby andTaylor, 1967 andVeys andWieme, 1968). “…The majority of reports were based on human material. Vesell et al (1962), Cohen (1964), Alexandersson et al (1968), Veys & Wieme (1968, Lindy et al (1971) and Wegner & Milhlback (1971) compared synovial fluids of different joint diseases as well as synovial fluid and blood serum from patients with joint diseases. Barthel et al (1971) reported changes in the LDH isoenzyme pattern of synovial fluid from swine infected with Mycoplasma hyorhinis.…”
