Lactic Acid Production from Fresh Cassava Roots Using Single-Stage Membrane Bioreactor

Abstract: The production of lactic acid from fresh cassava roots by Steptococcus bovis using membrane bioreactor was investigated. Single-stage membrane bioreactor (MBR) without purging was conducted to find out the concentration and productivity of the lactic acid obtained. The result showed that in a single stage MBR, the lactic acid productivity and concentration were 1.88 g/Lh and 15.7 g/L, respectively which were obtained at dilution rate of 0.12 h -1 and 30 g/L feeding sugar concentration. The result also indicate… Show more

“…Membrane bioreactor (MBR) could solve these problems satisfactorily. The efficiency of the membrane bioreactor was demonstrated in a number of previous studies on the enhancement of lactic acid productivity 4,9,10 . The membrane bioreactor can achieve and maintain a high cell density in the fermentor, which allows for high throughputs 11 .…”

“…Productions of lactic acid through fermentation of starch by S. bovis have been reported in previous studies, using batch system [11] and fed batch and continuous modes [18,19]. The results of these previous studies indicate that each system has its own advantages as well as disadvantages.…”

“…The present investigation was conducted as an attempt to develop an efficient fermentation process for production of lactic acid from cassava in single stage [18] and two stages [19]. The main objective of the study was to compare the performance of semicontinuous system with and without membrane separation (MF).…”

“…A membrane bioreactor integrating the processes of fermentation and separation could present valuable advantages with respect to increased lactic acid production. This method is expected to reduce product inhibition, reuse the unconverted substrate, obtain high cell density cultures, and decrease load on the next separation process [4,6].…”
