Lactic acid production from hemicellulosic hydrolyzate by cells of Lactobacillus bifermentans immobilized in Ca-alginate using response surface methodology

Abstract: Consumption of hexoses/pentoses and production of lactic acid by Lactobacillus bifermentans were investigated in optimized culture medium and hemicellulosic hydrolyzates. The hydrolyzate used had the following composition (expressed in gL -1 ): xylose 50 ± 5 gL -1 ; glucose 18 ± 3 gL -1 ; arabinose 29 ± 5 gL -1 . The immobilization experiments were conducted with microbial cells entrapped in calcium alginate beads. The results indicate that maximum concentrations of lactic acid were produced after 54 h of ferm… Show more

“…Lactobacilli are widely applied in industrial enzyme production processes, for example glucose-forming amylase 14 and lactase 15 . Different strains of Lactobacilli are the main fermentative lactic acid and γ -aminobutyric acid producers used in commercial processes as well as starters in dairy products 16, 17, 18…”

“…When large microgels are used in a packed‐bed column, they provide more interstitial spaces. They improve the flow conditions in the bed 8 and allow flow across the beads with less pressure drop 9. Microgels in the size range of 500–2000 μm give a distinct mouth feel and provide a clear visualization of the encapsulated product 10.…”
