Ladle furnace on-line reckoner for prediction and control of steel temperature and composition

Abstract: In the present day competitive market scenario, steel producers are striving for high speed continuous casting with stringent and consistent quality as well as reduced production cost. The ladle furnace (LF) is a key unit for achieving the above objectives during secondary steelmaking. Proper control of process parameters during LF processing of liquid steel is essential. The paper reports development of a model based advisory system, called ladle furnace on-line reckoner (LFOR), for the prediction and control… Show more

“…The temperature drop brings a lot of negative effects, such as the increase in energy consumption, the decrease in the metal recovery rate and even the solidification of molten iron. 2 These negative effects disturb the normal operation of the steelmaking process. The reduction of the temperature drop of molten iron can improve production efficiency and cut off production cost.…”

“…Several factors influence the heat losses that occur during refining. In order to maintain the desired temperature in ladle, arcing is required which is an energy intensive operation . These considerations establish the need for devising a good purging and arcing strategy to achieve the desired inclusion removal efficiency and superheat without adversely affecting the cost of refining.…”
