“…Recently, X-ray dark field phase contrast imaging has been investigated as a tool for rapid inspection yielding indications of defects or morphological features in polymers (165) and PMC (166,167). Both synchrotron and laboratory X-ray sources can be used (168).…”

“…By enabling the measurement of small angle scattering of the X-ray beam the Phase Contrast imaging technology provides an innovative tool to probe the structure and detect efficiently the defects like: porosity, micro-cracks, foreign objects and inclusions, delaminations, resin rich / resin poor areas or cut and wavy fibers. In particular, the method is used for the non-destructive inspection and characterization of composite materials [10,11]. To illustrate the performance of XPCI, Figure 8 shows a comparison between the "conventional" X-ray radiography and the dark field image obtained by XPCI for the detection of micro-cracks induced by an particle impact onto a carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFR) laminate as more and more used in the new, fueled efficient, generation of airplanes.…”

“…Finally, Computerized Tomography (CT) techniques could be combined with XPCI to obtain three-dimensional information about the index of refraction and the linear diffusion coefficient. This imaging modality was illustrated [11] and helped to separate the different materials composing the composite object.…”

“…As a further analysis tool, directional X-ray dark-field imaging is used in order to reconstruct fibre orientations of micrometer-sized aligned structures which are not resolvable directly [12][13][14]. The method is applicable for the analysis of bones [15][16][17] or the characterisation of fibre alignments in polymers [18][19][20]. An extension of directional dark-field imaging to a 3D analysis of fibre orientations is done by tensor tomography [21][22][23].…”
