Land suitability evaluation of abandoned tin-mining areas for agricultural development in Bangka Island, Indonesia

Abstract: : Kepulauan Bangka Belitung, Indonesia is one of the tin mineral-producer in the world.Agricultural crops could be a wise option for the reclamation since abandoned tin-mining lands have a high potency to be used as agricultural lands. This study was aimed to evaluate of the land/soil characteristics of abandoned tin-mining areas and to establish land suitability of the land area for agriculture used to formulate appropriate land development measures and amelioration strategies forutilization of mined areas fo… Show more

“…Potassium concentration in soil is highly abundant, but available fractions were usually low et al 2003), which adversely affected agricultural crops yield. In Diwata, on the other hand, the mine tailings that were tilled in the agricultural plantations sampled caused soil aggregates to become looser -affecting the water holding capacity, bulk density, and nutrient retention and availability (Asmarhansyah et al 2017;Sencindiver and Ammons 2000).…”

“…The short-term profits from tin mining lead to long-term problems concerning potential use of post-mining sites. The removal of overburden (the layer above the desired ore, in this case, topsoil) and toxic runoff from water and air interacting with mine tailings (the 99.985% of the gravel and rock that is stirred up that does not contain sufficient tin) has rendered much of the land of Bangka incapable of efficiently growing agricultural crops (Asmarhansyah et al 2017), similar to the role tin mining had on topsoil degradation in Nigeria (Godoy 1985). Sometimes pepper plantations were directly converted to ‘tin plantations’ (Erman 2007, p. 199).…”

“…One of the impacts of tin mining activity is the formation of tailings land. The tin mine tailings land has a low soil fertility status, indicated by the dominance of the sand fraction and low soil pH, organic carbon, cation exchange capacity, and essential macronutrients (Asmarhansyah et al, 2017).…”
