Land system science and sustainable development of the earth system: A global land project perspective

Abstract: Land systems are the result of human interactions with the natural environment. Understanding the drivers, state, trends and impacts of different land systems on social and natural processes helps to reveal how changes in the land system affect the functioning of the socio-ecological system as a whole and the tradeoff these changes may represent. The Global Land Project has led advances by synthesizing land systems research across different scales and providing concepts to further understand the feedbacks betw… Show more

“…Increasing change in land use often causes environmental damages that reach far beyond the local scope [1]. Different interests and demands as well as values and norms compete for limited land resources and the related ecosystem's services and functions (e.g., Müller et al [2], Zscheischler et al [3]).…”

“…Recent progress in land use science has provided an insightful large-scale perspective spanning centuries to millennia (19)(20)(21)(22). Additionally, European high-resolution datasets (23, 24) allow for investigations to be conducted at the scale of individual lake watersheds.…”

“…However, only one of these studies (13) considered the temporal dynamics of land cover and use, and only a few studies (16, 17) considered modern land cover. Our current lack of knowledge of the effects arising from cumulative environmental pressures presents the potential for serious underestimation of the long-term impacts of land use changes and hinders our ability to identify the relative importance of P sources to lake ecosystems (18).Recent progress in land use science has provided an insightful large-scale perspective spanning centuries to millennia (19)(20)(21)(22). “…Trees and grass have also been planted to improve the property of land that can hardly be utilized. All of these lead to increase in the degree and complexity of land utilization, which will inevitably affect regional ecological environment and its response to global changes [46].…”
