O objetivo do presente trabalho é verificar o potencial de atributos polarimétricos extraídos de imagens-radar PALSAR/ALOS conjugados ao atributo de coerência interferométrica dos dados TanDEM-X/TerraSAR-X para o mapeamento de uso e cobertura da terra na Amazônia brasileira. Na análise dessas imagens-radar uma série de atributos polarimétricos foi extraída a partir da informação de fase utilizando teoremas de decomposições de alvos formulados por Cloude-Pottier, Touzi, Freeman-Durden e Yamaguchi. Esse procedimento resultou em quatro grupos de atributos, os quais foram classificados individualmente e/ou associados à coerência interferométrica, através do algoritmo MAXVER-ICM. Empregando informações de campo, a validação temática foi realizada por matrizes de confusão, índice Kappa e exatidão global. No cenário investigado nove classes temáticas (floresta primária; solo em pousio ou solo preparado; sucessões secundárias avançada, intermediária e inicial; área cultivada; pasto sujo; pasto limpo; e corpo d’água) foram identificadas no processo de mapeamento deste ambiente tropical. Atributos polarimétricos derivados do teorema de decomposição de Cloude-Pottier (H/α/A) associados ao atributo de coerência interferométrica (γ) mostraram melhor desempenho classificatório (Kappa = 0,72 e exatidão global = 78,79%) comparado aos demais. A B S T R A C TThe aim of this study is to verify the potential of polarimetric attributes extracted from PALSAR/ALOS-1 radar images combined to the interferometric coherence from TanDEM-X/TerraSAR-X data for land use and land cover mapping in the Brazilian Amazon. From the phase informationIn of these radar images, polarimetric attributes were extracted by target decomposition theorems formulated by Cloude-Pottier, Touzi, Freeman-Durden and Yamaguchi. This procedure resulted in four groups of attributes, which were classified individually and/or associated with interferometric coherence descriptors through the MAXVER-ICM algorithm. Using field information the method was validated based on the confusion matrix, Kappa and overall accuracy. A total of nine thematic classes were identified in the mapping process of this tropical environment: primary forest; advanced, intermediate and initial secondary succession; bare soil; agricultural area; two classes of pasture and water body. Derived attributes from Cloude-Pottier decomposition theorem (H/α/A) associated with interferometric coherence attribute (γ) showed the best classification performance (Kappa = 0.72 and an overall accuracy = 78.79%) compared to the other methods.Keywords: land use and land cover; Amazon. “…The years of the major droughts fall between 1970s and 1980s and over abstraction of water mostly for irrigation purposes was a major contributor to the decreased water level in the lake and surrounding rivers, which are some of the contributors to the lake"s water (Chari-logone, Komadugu-Yobe and Yedsaram/Ngadda). The shrinkage and water overuse caused significant changes to land cover which results in shoreline variation, and these could be attributed to improper water administration practices throughout the recent 50 years (Babamaaji and Lee, 2014).These issues of droughts and the lake"s shrinkage have great consequences on the natural resources of the lake, as well as the standard of living of the inhabitants of the area in terms of job opportunities/poverty reduction and food security.…”

Abstract. Surface water is a significant constituent of the water cycle, and is paramount for human survival, social and economic development as well as environmental sustainability. Water level shrinkage and global warming are the main phenomena that becoming worldwide environmental problems. Lake Chad has been in a critical situation in recent years due to a continuous decline in surface water and drought, over abstraction of water and climate change caused a significant change of a land cover patterns. The present study aimed to highlight the change pattern of water level in the lake over the past three decades, and the satellite images of the Lake Chad from Landsat-TM, ETM+ and OLI were analyzed to investigate the change of land cover pattern during three periods: the 1985, 2000 and 2015. Supervised classification was performed for land cover change analysis. Then the overall accuracies of the classification of Landsat-TM is 93.80, Landsat-ETM+ is 90.80 and Landsat-OLI is 86.20 respectively. The result shows that there are continuous decline of water bodies, barren land and shrub, with rapid increment of farmland and gallery forest.

Remote sensing appraisal of Lake Chad shrinkage connotes severe impacts on green economics and socio-economics of the catchment area

Lake Chad commonly serves as a major hub of fertile economic activities for the border communities and contributes immensely to the national growth of all the countries that form its boundaries. However, incessant and multi-decadal drying via climate change pose greater threats to this transnational water resource, and adverse effects on ecological sustainability and socio-economic status of the catchment area. Therefore, this study assessed the extent of shrinkage of Lake Chad using remote sensing. Landsat imageries of the lake and its surroundings between 1987 and 2005 were retrieved from Global Land Cover Facility website and analysed using Integrated Land and Water Information System version 3.3 (ILWIS 3.3). Supervised classification of area around the lake was performed into various land use/land cover classes, and the shrunk part of its environs was assessed based on the land cover changes. The shrinkage trend within the study period was also analysed. The lake water size reduced from 1339.018 to 130.686 km2 (4.08–3.39%) in 1987–2005. The supervised classification of the Landsat imageries revealed an increase in portion of the lake covered by bare ground and sandy soil within the reference years (13 490.8–17 503.10 km2) with 4.98% total range of increase. The lake portion intersected with vegetated ground and soil also reduced within the period (11 046.44–10 078.82 km2) with 5.40% (967.62 km2) total decrease. The shrunk part of the lake covered singly with vegetation increased by 2.74% from 1987 to 2005. The shrunk part of the lake reduced to sand and turbid water showed 5.62% total decrease from 1987 to 2005 and a total decrease of 1805.942 km2 in area. The study disclosed an appalling rate of shrinkage and damaging influences on the hydrologic potential, eco-sustainability and socio-economics of the drainage area as revealed using ILWIS 3.3.
