“…Prophylactic administration of a β-blocker is already recommended. 37 Sezai et al reported that the perioperative infusion of landiolol before weaning from cardiopulmonary bypass and the initiation of oral bisoprolol on POD1 significantly lowered the incidence of POAF. 38 Most of the information about the effect of β-blockers on POAF has been obtained from patients undergoing CABG.…”

“…Sakamoto et al did not directly compare the 2 drugs, but they emphasized the few side effects with landiolol, noting that studies reporting the side effects of esmolol were not uncommon. 7 Although no direct comparison was undertaken in that study, hypotension <90 mmHg occurred in 4 cases among 35 subjects (11.4%) with landiolol 7 compared with 7 cases among 15 (46.7%) for esmolol. 4 Ikeshita et al 10 used whole isolated rabbit heart preparations to compared the inhibitory action of landiolol and esmolol against isoproterenol-induced tachycardia.…”

“…This indicates that stress due to intubation and/or surgical procedures was lower in Group L. The finding that the heart rate was significantly lower in Group L even after landiolol infusion was ceased suggests that early introduction of this drug alleviated stress on the heart. This study employed landiolol infusion at 5 µg/kg/min, but reports on cardiovascular surgery indicate that it exerts a significant effect when infused at only 2 µg/kg/min [9] [13]. As a significant reduction in cardiac output during landiolol infusion has been reported in patients with a low cardiac output (ejection fraction < 50%) [14], patients with an ASA-PS score of 4 or higher were excluded from the present study.…”
