Landscape degradation by smelter emissions near Sudbury, Canada, and subsequent amelioration and restoration.

Abstract: A century of sulfur dioxide fumigation, copper and nickel particulate deposition, fire, soil erosion and enhanced frost action resulting from mining and smeltering has created 17, 00 ha of barren land and 72 000 ha of stunted, open birch-maple (Betula/Acer) woodland in the Sudbury area of Ontario, Canada. The primary factor limiting plant colonization is the acidic, aluminium-, copper- and nickel-toxic properties of the soils, although certain plant species have developed genetically based metal tolerance. “…Excessive land use and ecological imbalance appear to be major factors that threaten environmental stability on local as well as global levels (Luttermann & Freedman 2000;Winterhalder 2000;Lee et al 2004Lee et al , 2007. Symptoms of decline observed in the vicinity of industrial complexes including Yeocheon where this study was carried out (Kim 1991;Lee 1992;Lee et al 2004, and in urban areas (Kim 1991;Rhyu 1994;Rhyu & Kim 1994;, correspond to such examples.…”

“…Nevertheless, even under severe plant competition and imposition of air pollution stresses, some species increase their growth. This occurs if a competitive advantage is given to them by the relatively greater impact of the pollutant on other species in the vegetation, and the growth of other species in the same vegetation may be greatly reduced because of their lowered competitive potential (Kercher et al 1980;Kozlowski 1980;Luttermann & Freedman 2000;Winterhalder 2000;Lee et al 2004).…”
