We analyse genre in the speech of young people with multi-ethnic friendship groups in Paris in order to address the as yet unresolved question of whether new quotatives equivalent in meaning to English BE LIKE result from simultaneous independent parallel developments in languages other than English or from a process of calquing.We conclude that French quotative genre results from independent internal developments but that it enters the French quotative system in the same way that BE LIKE entered the English system, driven by the meanings of 'similarity' or 'approximation' that are shared by the lexical item genre in a range of syntactic categories. We propose that in order for a new similarity quotative to emerge, a lexical item with a meaning of 'similarity' or 'approximation' must become syntactically multifunctional, and that the use of that lexical item must reach a critical frequency threshold. In the case of genre we suggest that the necessary increase in frequency results from the development of the lexical item into a discourse marker.We also analyse another new French quotative, ETRE LA, a sequence that we find is used to highlight activity of many kinds (including, but not confined to, spoken behaviour). This paper describes the two kinds of English extant in Japan today. These are 'Japanized English,' based.on the use of English loanwords spoken by Japanese among themselves, and 'the Japanese variety of English,' spoken as a second language with foreigners. It is argued that these varieties have their origins in three lines of linguistic contact between Japan and the West (particularly America and Britain) during the past century: a tine of pidginization, a tine of borrowing, and a line of formal English instruction. By examining the unique results of this contact situation, insight can be gained on both the dynamics of Japanese culture and the viability of English as an international language.

The main problem in this research is how the form of code switching and code-mixing sellers and buyers in the Pabbaeng Baeng traditional market. This study aimed to describe the phenomenon of language is the code switching and code-mixing sellers and buyers in the Pabbaeng Baeng traditional market. This research is a descriptive study using descriptive method and theory. This study includes the planning, and conduct of the study. Subjects in this study are the sellers and buyers in the Pabbaeng Baeng traditional market. The data in this study intangible language use by sellers and buyers in the Pabbaeng Baeng traditional market, at the time of the transaction. For that, consider the techniques used freely in conversation, recording technique, and technical notes. The results showed that, the events of code switching and code-mixing that occurs between sellers and buyers in the Pabbaeng Baeng traditional market, caused by several factors including, age, gender, and ethnicity. First, almost all sellers and buyers who trade in the Pabbaeng Baeng traditional market the original inhabitants of the Bugis and Makassar, they automatically use the language of the Bugis and Makassar. Second, almost all sellers and buyers in the Pabbaeng Baeng traditional market master two or three languages, so that language mastery influence of code switching and code-mixing. Abstrak Masalah utama dalam penelitian ini yaitu bagaimana bentuk alih kode dan campur kode penjual dan pembeli di pasar Pasar Tradisional Pabbaeng Baeng. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan fenomena kebahasaan yaitu alih kode dan campur kode penjual dan pembeli di pasar Pasar Tradisional Pabbaeng Baeng. Jenis penelitian ini adalah penelitian deskriptif yang menggunakan metode teori dan deskriptif. Penelitian ini meliputi perencanaan, dan pelaksanaan penelitian. Subjek dalam penelitian ini adalah penjual dan pembeli di pasar Pasar Pabbaeng Baeng. Data dalam penelitian ini berwujud pemakaian bahasa oleh penjual dan pembeli di pasar Pasar Pabbaeng Baeng, pada saat kegiatan transaksi jual-beli. Untuk itu, digunakan teknik simak bebas dalam percakapan, teknik rekam, dan teknik mencatat. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa, peristiwa alih kode dan campur kode yang terjadi antara penjual dan pembeli di Pasar Tradisional Pabbaeng Baeng, disebabkan oleh beberapa faktor diantaranya, faktor usia, jenis kelamin, dan etnis. Pertama, hampir semua penjual dan pembeli yang berniaga di pasar Pasar Tradisional Pabbaeng Baeng merupakan penduduk asli suku Bugis dan Makassar, otomatis mereka menggunakan bahasa Bugis dan Makassar. Kedua, hampir semua penjual dan pembeli di pasar Pasar Pabbaeng Baeng menguasai dua atau tiga bahasa, sehingga penguasaan bahasa tersebut ikut mempengaruhi alih kode dan campur kode.
