Lanosteryl triterpenes from Protorhus longifolia as a cardioprotective agent: a mini review

Abstract: The epidemic of cardiovascular diseases is a global phenomenon that is exaggerated by the growing prevalence of diabetes mellitus. Coronary artery disease and diabetic cardiomyopathy are the major cardiovascular complications responsible for exacerbated myocardial infarction in diabetic individuals. Increasing research has identified hyperglycemia and hyperlipidemia as key factors driving the augmentation of oxidative stress and a pro-inflammatory response that usually results in increased fibrosis and reduced… Show more

“…Inflammatory cardiomyocyte signaling is associated with the overproduction of both cytosolic and mitochondrial ROS (33,34). Hyperglycemia is indeed a key known driver of oxidative stress and inflammation, thereby driving cardiac fibrosis and reduced cardiac function (35). Such myocardial inflammation can drive DCM development with NF-κB signaling within the cardiac tissue being a major driver of this disease progression (36).…”

“…Moreover, CPE can improve insulin level, glucose tolerance, and insulin sensitivity and reduce insulin resistance in DM mice [64] . Hyperglycemia is a known key driver of oxidative stress and inflammation, which lead to cardiac fibrosis and decreased cardiac function [65] . Wang et al proved that CPE can prevent structural and functional changes in the heart tissue of diabetic mice [66] .…”

“…[156] Lanosteryl triterpenes isolated from Protorhus longifolia act as a cardioprotective agent in diabetic cardiomyopathy and ischemic heart diseases. [157] Periplogenin-3-O-Dglucopyranosyl-(1→6)-Dglucopyaranosyl-(1→4)-Dcymaropyranoside, isolated from A. marmelos, shows protective effects against DOX-induced cardiovascular morbidities and hepatotoxicity in rats. [158] Plant polyphenols are also used for the prevention of heart diseases.…”
