Lansoprazole and secnidazole with clarithromycin, amoxycillin or pefloxacin in the eradication of Helicobacter pylori in a developing country

Abstract: High H. pylori eradication rates were achieved using the amoxycillin- and clarithromycin-based therapies. Fewer side-effects, better compliance and low cost favoured the amoxycillin-based therapy.

“…For this reason, alternative regimens that overcome bacterial resistance to standard antibiotics and reduce the incidence of side effects have been evaluated. In recent years new treatment schemes based on fluoroquinolones (levofloxacin or moxifloxacin plus an antibiotic and a PPI) have been under investigation, either as the first line or as rescue therapies [9][10][11][12]; however, first-generation fluoroquinolones such as norfloxacin and pefloxacin did not show satisfactory eradication rates [24,25]. Several studies have evaluated the efficacy of different levofloxacin-based triple therapies (associated with rabeprazole and amoxicillin or nitroimidazole) and shown eradication rates up to 90% [9,10].…”

“…Another Indian study compared three different regimens, containing a PPI, secnidazole, a nitroimidazole, and clarithromycin, amoxicillin or pefloxacin, an analog of norfloxacin not approved by the Food and Drug Administration. The combination with pefloxacin achieved an eradication success of 71% [Ahuja et al 1998]. …”
