Laparoendoscopic single‐site urological surgery: Initial experience in Japan

Abstract: Abstract:The objective of this paper is to report our initial experience in laparoendoscopic single-site surgery (LESS). One patient underwent LESS varicocelectomy and another patient underwent LESS pyeloplasty. The Triport was inserted into the abdomen through the umbilical incision. In the varicocelectomy, testicular vessels were coagulated by a vesselsealing system, and transected. In the pyeloplasty, a 2-mm needlescopic port was added to facilitate the procedure, and a dismembered procedure was performed. … Show more

“…In Japan, LESS-AD was first reported by Hirano in 2005, 9 and LESS-PP and varicocele surgery were reported by Kawauchi in 2010. 16 In the present study, 42 (28%) of 152 institutions implemented LESS/RPS procedures, whereas C-LAP was carried out in all institutions surveyed. In contrast, the percentage of patients undergoing LESS/RPS was 12% of the total number of patients undergoing laparoscopic surgeries for the six main procedures.…”

“…LESS has been shown to be a safe and feasible method while performing surgery on the gastrointestinal [2][3][4][5][6] and genitourinary tracts [7,8]. Similarly, the application of LESS in gynecology has been shown to be safe and effective among surgeries for benign conditions involving the uterus [9][10][11][12] and adnexa [13][14][15][16][17][18], as well as gynecologic malignancies [19][20][21][22].…”

“…Intraoperative or postoperative complications were not observed. Kawauchi et al [14] reported a 13-year-old boy with a left varicocele. The operative method was similar to that in the study by Kaouk and Palmer, except for the use of the TriPort and the transection of vessels by Ligasure without surgical clips.…”

“…To date at our institution, 16 LESS for pediatric patients were performed, including seven pyeloplasties, three nephrectomies and varicocelectomies and one heminephrectomy, orchidopexy and orchiectomy (unpublished data except one varicocelectomy) [14]. The TriPort was inserted through an umbilical index finger-size (around 1.2 mm in diameter) incision.…”
