Laparoscopic Assisted Cystectomy and Lymphadenectomy for Bladder Cancer: Initial Experience

Abstract: This study discusses our initial experience in the field of laparoscopic management of bladder carcinoma. Ten patients with invasive bladder tumors of variable histology and ranging from stage T2 to T3b were submitted to this procedure. Intraoperative assessment, lateral dissection, posterior dissection, anterior dissection, and urethral transection were achieved laparoscopically. The specimen retrieval and continent pouch construction was performed through a limited abdominal incision. This new regimen allows… Show more

“…The high complication rate described by Denewer et al [9] probably reflects the advanced stage of malignancy of their patients, and in particular that most had had previous radical radiotherapy. “…Denewer et al [9] reported 10 patients, showing that even patients who had previously had radical radiotherapy could successfully undergo a laparoscopic cystectomy. A modified ureterosigmoidostomy diversion was performed through a mini-laparotomy.…”

“…The success of laparoscopy in the most diverse urological procedures led to its employment in complex pelvic surgeries and in the treatment of bladder cancer (2)(3)(4)(5). In selected patients having bladder carcinoma, open partial cystectomy can be performed with similar results and lower morbidity when compared with series of radical cystectomy (6,7).…”

“…Although surgical technique varies slightly in different centres, and between the sexes, several common principles are applied, as reported in most initial series [9][10][11][12]. A transperitoneal four-or five-port technique is used.…”
