Laparoscopic intraperitoneal mesh repair of Spigelian hernia: A case report

Abstract: Spigelian hernia is a rare congenital defect of the anterior abdominal wall located along the semilunar line through the aponeurosis fascia of the transversus abdominis muscle. It represents 1%-2% of all abdominal wall hernias. Few cases of laparoscopic treatment for Spigelian hernia have been reported, especially in Japan. However, several reports of laparoscopic surgery to repair Spigelian hernias have been published, and some have shown that the laparoscopic approach repair is feasible because it is associa… Show more

“…This allows the advantage of covering the defect but shielding the bowel from contact with the mesh by repairing the peritoneal flap to sequestrate the mesh. All of these approaches carry excellent rates of success for non-obstructed hernias [5][6][7]. Copyright: ©2018 Seetahal S. “…Spigelian hernia occurs through a defect in the Spigelian fascia which lies between the rectus abdominis medially and the linea semilunaris laterally. Spigelian hernia was first reported by Klinkosch in 1764 although the semilunar line was first described by Belgian anatomist Adriaan van den Spiegel in 1645 [3] .…”

“…It was not until 1764, more than a century after the description of the semilunar line, that a Spigelian hernia was described for the first time, reported by the Belgian anatomist Josef Klinkosch [3,6,8].…”

“…Spigelian hernias (SH) are defined as a protrusion of preperitoneal fat, peritoneum or an organ through a defect that can be acquired or congenital, located laterally to the rectus abdominis in the anterior abdominal wall [2,3]. This type of hernia is rare and has been estimated to account for <2% of all abdominal wall hernias [3][4][5][6][7][8][9][10]. Pain is the most common symptom reported by patients [4,7], but there are no pathognomonic signs and symptoms, making clinical diagnosis difficult.…”
