Laparoscopic Simultaneous Partial Pericystectomy and Total Cystectomy for Hydatid Liver Cysts – Case Report

Abstract: Surgery remains the gold standard for the treatment of patients with echinococcosis, despite significant economic costs, advances in medical treatment and interventional radiology; in the past decades there has been a tendency toward laparoscopic surgery. We present a 66-year-old patient, from a rural area, who was admitted to our service complaining of spontaneous and palpatory pains in the right hypocondrium, headaches and dizziness. Abdominal CT scan highlighted 2 round calcified tumors, one of 7.2 cm diamet… Show more

“…Partial pericystectomy was carried with the help of a laparoscopic hook by using monopolar diathermy, which involved resection of the corticalized pericyst (externalized extrahepatic) up to the border with the liver parenchyma while the part of the intrahepatic pericyst (residual cavity) communicating with the remainder of the peritoneal cavity remained in situ. 18,19 After marsupialization of the cavity, omentoplasty was preferred for the obliteration of the residual cavity in the liver. The laminated membrane, resected pericyst along with the cystic contents and gauge pieces were evacuated through plastic endobag.…”

“…There are different forms of treatment available, including follow-up, albendazole, intervention, and surgery; the appropriate form of treatment is usually selected according to the stage of echinococcosis, the overall condition of the patient, along with the location and number of lesions. [ 3 ] Radical surgical resection is the gold standard for the treatment of echinococcosis. [ 4 ] However, for various reasons, most patients cannot choose radical resection at the time of consultation and are forced to choose medication or non-radial surgery.…”

“…This mini-invasive procedure was firstly described by Saglam et al [3]. Since that time, many case reports and series have been published [4,5]. The outcome and complications of this procedure were then reported in one systematic review [1]; which stated the availability of variant techniques in the laparoscopic field.…”
