Laparoscopic surgery in situs inversus: a literature review and a report of laparoscopic sigmoidectomy for diverticulitis in situs inversus

Abstract: The laparoscopic approach is feasible in cases of SI, although technically more complicated because of the different position of the organs and the different laparoscopic view of the anatomy.

“…5 This condition may be associated with other congenital anomalies, such as biliary atresia and congenital heart disease. 2,6 But there is no evidence to suggest that these patients are predisposed to cholelithiasis. Diagnosis of gallstone disease is often delayed in patients without known history of situs inversus because of atypical location of pain.…”

“…1 Situs inversus totalis can be either alone or in combination with chronic sinusitis and bronchiectasis called as Kartagener syndrome. 2 There are very few reports of laparoscopic surgery in Kartagener syndrome because of associated respiratory disorders. 3,4 Anatomy of the abdominal organs in such a patient is distorted, making laparoscopic surgery difficult.…”

“…Laparoscopy can prove to be an even greater technical challenge. Although laparoscopic colorectal surgery has recently become a standard procedure, there are only seven reports on laparoscopic surgery in patients with SIT [2][3][4][5][6][7][8]. There are three sigmoidectomies, two hemicolectomies, one abdominoperineal resection, and one total mesenteric excision.…”

“…Accordingly, surgical procedures are considered more difficult in patients with SIT than others because of different anatomic positions of organs, especially in laparoscopic surgery. While laparoscopic colorectal surgery recently has become a standard procedure, only seven previous reports of laparoscopic surgery for colonic disease in patients with SIT are available [2][3][4][5][6][7][8].…”

“…births. In conjunction with chronic sinusitis and bronchiectasis, SIT is a well-known characteristic of a rare congenital disorder called Kartagener syndrome [1][2][3] . Although laparoscopic procedures in such patients have been reported, most described cases have been associated with laparoscopic cholecystectomy 4 .…”
