Large Eddy Simulation of a Bluff Body Stabilised Premixed Flame Using Flamelets

Abstract: Large Eddy Simulations of an unconfined turbulent lean premixed flame, which is stabilised behind a bluff body, are conducted using unstrained flamelets as the sub-grid scale combustion closure. The statistics from the simulations are compared with the corresponding data obtained from the experiment and it is demonstrated that the experimental observations are well captured. The relative positioning of the shear layers and the flame brush are analysed to understand the radial variations of the turbulent kineti… Show more

“…It is also worth mentioning that SGS variance transport has been adopted in several LES simulations Langella et al , 2018Massey et al 2018;Chen et al 2019a;b, 2020;Massey et al 2019) in the past for atmospheric flames, and these simulations successfully used several model expressions considered in this analysis (e.g. Eqs.…”

“…This SDR based reaction rate closure was also previously successfully implemented in LES albeit for atmospheric premixed turbulent combustion (Ma et al 2014a;Butz et al 2015) and the SDR closure given by Eqs. 16i and 16ii has been used in several previous LES studies (Ma et al 2014a;Butz et al 2015;Langella et al 2018;Massey et al 2018;Chen et al 2019aChen et al , b, 2020Massey et al 2019) for atmospheric premixed combustion. The current analysis justifies the choices of the model expressions given by Eqs.…”

“…The SGS parameters Da Δ , C 3 , C 4 , and K c are described in detail by Dunstan et al (2013). This model has been successfully used in many previous studies (Chen et al, 2017(Chen et al, , 2019Langella et al, 2018Langella et al, , 2016Massey et al, 2018). The laminar flame speed s 0 L , thermal thickness δ 0 L and the heat release parameter τ, shown in Equation 8, depend on the local mixture fraction (Ruan et al, 2014).…”

“…The present data on flame location as a function of operating condition and approach to global blow-off, on FSD, and the width of CH 2 O regions can be useful for modelling studies. Typical efforts for turbulent premixed flames include pre-tabulated approaches [11,63,64] and on-line solution of the chemical structures [65][66][67][68]. Both approaches could benefit from the present experimental data.…”
