Large for Gestational Age and Obesity-Related Comorbidities

Abstract: Both small for gestational age and large for gestational age (LGA) size at birth are associated with metabolic complications throughout life. The long-term consequences of LGA have been investigated in only a few studies. LGA is thought to be associated with early obesity and metabolic risk. Understanding how LGA can influence later obesity risk is important for pediatric obesity interventions. Pregnant women who are overweight or obese are at high risk of having LGA babies. Infants born LGA are at increased r… Show more

“…Increasing evidence shows that slight changes in birth weight (corrected for gestational-age) may have lifelong consequences for these children; both low and high birth weight are associated with complications throughout life. 16 17 RA is for example associated with SGA, which itself is associated with an increased risk on metabolic and cardiovascular disease later in life. 18 19 On the other hand, children born with a high birth weight have an increased risk of becoming overweight, on metabolic syndrome and giving birth to a child that is LGA as well.…”

“…Ketika seorang bayi mengalami BBLR maka akan mempengaruhi kelangsungan hidup dari masa perinatal hingga dewasa seperti mengalami risiko tinggi dalam kesakitan, kematian dan kecacatan (6). Beberapa penyakit yang telah dilaporkan pada anak dengan BBLR seperti gangguan defisi perhatian/hiperaktif, hipertensi, cardiovaskuler, obesitas dan juga diabetes mellitus tipe-2 (7)(8)(9).…”

“…In addition, the prevalence of large for gestational age (LGA) and macrosomia is also increasing, especially in developing countries [6,7]. LGA and macrosomia are also considered factors that can increase the risk of early obesity, metabolic diseases [8], diabetes and early cardiovascular disease [9,10]. Growth restriction and excessive growth were two extremes of fetal development, both of which were associated with neonatal mortality and other adverse outcomes.…”
