Large reductions in child overweight and obesity in intervention and comparison communities 3 years after a community project

Abstract: The 8%-point reduction in overweight/obesity in both areas over 6 years from baseline to 3 years post-intervention was substantial. While the benefits of BAEW increased in the intervention community in the long term, the surrounding communities appeared to have more than caught up in programme investments and health gains, suggesting a possible 'viral spread' of obesity prevention actions across the wider region.

As with these other community-based interventions, [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][32][33][34][35][36][37] Mebane on the Move aimed to increase PA through changes to the built environment. The previous initiatives were purposeful environmental interventions, often instigated by researchers.…”

“…[4][5][6][7][8] McLeroy and colleagues 9 define community-based interventions as initiatives that aim to create healthier environments through systemic changes in policy, services, and institutions. Recent reviews suggest that interventions targeting children are most effective when a school component is included and community organizations are engaged in the research.…”

“…20 SCOPE (Sustainable Childhood Obesity Prevention through Community Engagement) is a CBPR childhood obesity prevention initiative currently being implemented in British Columbia (BC). SCOPE builds on existing successful CBPR childhood obesity initiatives [8][9][10][11][12] and explores the translation of this CBPR approach into the Canadian context. In this paper, we describe the SCOPE experience using process evaluation data, framing the discussion within the Collective Impact (CI) model.…”
